In Britain there are around 2,500 species of moth. They are important pollinators of wild flowers and some trees, and are crucial foods for birds, bats and other mammals.
THE FROG Common frogs are most active at night. They can breathe through their skin (as well as their lungs), and hibernate during the winter under piles of rotting leaves, logs or stones, or in pond mud.
THE BAT Bats are nocturnal mammals that come out in the evening to find food such as gnats and moths. They sleep during the winter months, and hibernate in trees and buildings.
THE SLUG Slugs are similar to snails, but they don’t have a shell. They’re not very fond of cold weather, so when it’s colder than 5° they’ll snuggle down deep into the soil to keep warm.
